Botox for excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)

Highly effective, long-lasting relief from hyperhidrosis - using medical-grade botulinum toxin administered with specialist precision by a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.

Specialist service: This treatment is provided by Ms. Soudeh Chegini, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, who practises on-site at New Forest Family Dental.

About the treatment

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive, uncontrollable sweating that goes far beyond what is needed for temperature regulation. It affects approximately 1–3% of the population and can profoundly impact quality of life - causing social embarrassment, anxiety, and practical difficulties in daily activities.

Botulinum toxin A (Botox) injections are one of the most effective treatments available for hyperhidrosis. By temporarily blocking the nerve signals that stimulate sweat glands, the injections dramatically reduce sweating in the treated area for up to twelve months.

Ms. Chegini administers this treatment with precision and clinical expertise, using a starch-iodine mapping test where appropriate to identify the most active areas and target injections accurately.

Why choose Botox

Effective, safe, and long-lasting.

  • Highly effective

Botulinum toxin injections for hyperhidrosis achieve an 80–90% reduction in sweating in most patients - providing dramatic, life-changing relief.

  • Long-lasting results

A single treatment session typically controls sweating for six to twelve months before a repeat treatment is needed.

  • No surgery required

Botox for sweating is a non-surgical procedure carried out in the clinic with no general anaesthetic, no incisions, and minimal downtime.

  • Medical-grade treatment

Ms. Chegini uses medical-grade botulinum toxin A, administered with clinical precision. This is a medical procedure - not a cosmetic treatment.

  • Specialist-administered

As a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with expertise in facial anatomy and injections, Ms. Chegini brings exceptional precision to this treatment.

  • Minimal downtime

Most patients resume normal activities immediately after treatment. There is no significant recovery period required.

Your treatment

From consultation to relief.

  1. 1

    Consultation

Ms. Chegini assesses the severity and distribution of your hyperhidrosis, reviews your medical history, and discusses the treatment in detail.

  2. 2

    Starch-iodine test

Where appropriate, a starch-iodine test is used to precisely map the areas of most active sweating before injection.

  3. 3

    Topical anaesthetic

A topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the treatment area to minimise discomfort from the injections.

  4. 4

    Botulinum toxin injections

Multiple small injections of botulinum toxin A are administered across the treatment area in a systematic grid pattern.

  5. 5

    Aftercare advice

You are advised to avoid strenuous exercise and heat exposure for 24 hours. Side effects are typically mild and transient.

  6. 6

    Review appointment

Review appointments will be arranged if clinically indicated to assess your response to treatment. Any areas with insufficient response can receive a top-up injection.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions.

How quickly does Botox for sweating work?

Most patients notice a significant reduction in sweating within two to four days of treatment, with maximum effect at approximately two weeks.

How long do the results last?

Results typically last between six and twelve months. Some patients experience longer-lasting results with repeated treatments.

Is it painful?

The injections use very fine needles and are applied to a topically anaesthetised area. Most patients find the procedure very well tolerated.

Is this different from cosmetic Botox?

Yes. While both use botulinum toxin, hyperhidrosis treatment is a medical procedure targeting overactive sweat glands - not a cosmetic treatment for wrinkles. The injection technique, dosage, and areas treated are quite different.

Are there any side effects?

Temporary mild bruising or soreness at injection sites is the most common side effect. Compensatory sweating (increased sweating at another site) occasionally occurs with axillary treatment but is usually mild. Serious side effects are very rare.

Can I use this treatment for hands?

Yes. Palmar hyperhidrosis is effectively treated with botulinum toxin, though hand injections can be more uncomfortable than axillary treatment. We discuss this in detail at consultation.
